Scotty's Team

Tom Scott
Owner/Auto Technician
"People often ask where the name Scotty's came from. It's actually a childhood nickname because my last name is Scott. I started working on dirt bikes at 14 and eventually moved on to cars. After high school, I joined the Army and worked as a mechanic on trucks and jeeps, even earning the Mechanic of the Year award. After serving for four years, I returned to Syracuse and got hired as a tow truck driver for AAA. In 1988, I bought my own tow truck and subcontracted for AAA. By 1991, I had three tow trucks and a two-bay repair shop in Lyncourt. In 1994, we bought our current location, did some renovations, and opened in 1995. Over the past 30 years, I've worked on many types of vehicles. It's amazing to think we used to look up labor times in books—now we have all that information at our fingertips thanks to computers.I turned 65 this year, and everyone wonders when I'll retire. It's not easy to pick a date and say that's my last day when you own your own business. This summer, I started by taking Fridays off. It's a start, and I know my son Lance will excel in the business and bring his modern thinking to take Scotty's to the next level."
Beth Scott
Owner/Business Manager
"I met Tom at AAA downtown in 1985. He was a tow truck driver, and I was a travel agent booking business trips for various corporations in Syracuse. I never imagined I would end up running an auto repair shop, especially since I knew nothing about cars.We got married in 1988, and I was five months pregnant when Tom bought his first place to start his own auto repair business. I stayed home for many years to be with our two children and gradually got involved in the business by teaching myself QuickBooks and handling the bookkeeping.Once we moved the shop to the Minoa location, I started working while the children were in school. By keeping my ears open and taking lots of notes, I slowly learned the business. I found that the basics of a car could be related to the human body. Brake, gas, oil, transmission, and power steering fluid were like blood flow in our bodies. The steering and suspension parts were like our knees, elbows, and all the joints in between. I quickly learned how living in a 'salt zone' affects the ability to replace parts. Everything is corroded together. We had a mechanic who moved here from California, and he lasted a week! He just couldn't handle how hard it was to get nuts and bolts off with all the corrosion. Every now and then, we get a car from out of state. They always leave me in awe when you can see every nut and bolt, and each part is in pristine condition! We've had so many wonderful customers and received many gifts over the years. We've seen the circle of life as they have watched us age and our children grow up. I know the business will thrive with our son at the helm, and the cycle will continue as he helps his peers with their cars."
Lance Scott
Lead Automotive Technician
"Ever since I was around 12 years old and got my first dirt bike, racing motocross with the family, I quickly learned how to start working on those bikes that constantly broke down. My dad taught me everything I needed to know and more. This passion turned into working at the shop part-time while I was still in school, and then full-time as soon as I graduated. I knew I didn’t want anything else in life but this. We learn something new every day, which makes every day different and exciting. I'm also looking forward to taking over the shop when my parents, Beth and Tom, retire, and continuing the legacy they built."
Jessica Scott
Marketing Manager/Service Advisor
"Lance and I started dating in 2018 and got married in 2025, I just recently started getting more involved at the shop. I have so much fun being behind the scenes creating social media content and thinking of creative ways the shop can be more involved in the community. I’ve successfully hosted our first two women’s workshops and I can’t wait for the nice weather to roll back around so we can host more, that was such an incredible and rewarding experience! I’m excited to see what else I’ll come up with for the future at Scotty’s! I’m so grateful the shop is nestled in such a great community such as Minoa, it makes my role so much easier being able to collaborate with incredible local businesses!"
Austin
Automotive Technician
"Growing up, my father was an industrial mechanic and my grandfather was an automotive mechanic. I was always watching them fix things and listening to their job stories. Naturally, I developed an interest in turning wrenches myself. This led me to take automotive classes in high school and then pursue it in college. Now, I find myself working at Scotty's, surrounded by great mentors who continue to teach me new tricks every day.My favorite parts of being a mechanic are definitely collecting more tools and adding to my skillset with these ever-evolving repairs."
Ben
Automotive Technician
"I always repaired my own vehicles with my Dad and Grandpa growing up, so it felt natural to begin a career in automotive repair. I became fascinated in working on cars and heavy equipment because of this and ended up going to college for diesel technology which I am in my senior year and pursuing my internship through Scotty's. I enjoy working at Scotty's because I have great mentors here to teach me everything I need to know and more as well as being given the freedom to develop as a technician."
